Published Articles

I have had a number of articles published in both online and print format.

The Paddler Magazine

The foremost international magazine for all kinds of paddler, be it kayak, open canoe, Stand Up Paddle board or inflatable. I am now a regular contributor.

Rogen, Roros, The Paddler Magazine, Mal Grey, Part 1, canoeing

12 days in the wild of Scandinavia, crossing from the magical Rogen in Sweden into Norway via huge lakes, wilderness rivers, epic portages and lots of rocks!

canoeing, Rogen, Roros, Norway, The Paddler Magazine, part 2, Mal Grey

The second part of our adventure follows the Roa River and crosses the immense lake of Femunden at sunset.

Canoeing the Gorges du Tarn

The Tarn Gorges are some of the most spectacular in Europe, and this article describes a descent of the main sections of the gorge, modest whitewater paddling in incredible scenery

Whitney-on-Wye toll bridge

The whole ethos of this site is that you can find adventure and wild places even close to home. I wrote an article for The Paddler magazine that hopefully gives you a sense of the joy of such places when paddling quietly in an open canoe on the waters of southern England.

In Love with the NW Highlands article co

My favourite place in the world, the Northwest Highlands of Scotland, is a land of remarkable mountains, world class coastlines, and a whole host of thin blue lines and lochs on which you can paddle till your heart's content. This article for The Paddler hopefully captures a little of the essence of travelling in this special part of the world.

Inverpolly Cover.png

A mad adventure in the wonderful North West Highlands, linking lochs by walking over hills with canoes and enough gear to supply an army. For 9 days, we lived outdoors in this magical landscape, and met 2 people. Even on our crowded isles, you can still get away from it all with a little effort.

Glaskogen Article Cover.JPG

An article about the whole wonderful area of Glaskogen from a paddler's perspective, not just about a specific trip. After 3 visits to the area, I felt reasonably well qualified to write about it.

By Canoe to the Maiden Cover Image.JPG

An account of a slightly mad approach to a pair of Scotland's remotest Munros, after a 2 day canoe portage and loch-hop to reach Fionn Loch first. A stunning wild camp on Dubh Loch, with an ascent of A' Mhaighdean and Ruadh Stac Mor made for a truly memorable trip.

UK Hillwalking - an extremely popular website and forum

Twinned with UK Climbing, the articles can be varied and touch on many aspects of outdoor activity around a core of hillwalking. The forum is one of the busiest around.

There was so much portaging on our Inverpolly trip, that UK Hillwalking were interested in an article about it too!
